Hello! My Name is Megan Harris and this year I have the honor of being your child’s 1st grade teacher for the 2023-2024 school year! Born and raised in Michigan, I enjoy camping, relaxing in my hammock, and exploring everything this beautiful state has to offer. When I'm not sleeping in a tent, I enjoy baking, traveling the world, and being with friends and family. I can often be found with a squad of two to eight children who call me “Aunt Megan.”

Traveling around the world and exploring new cultures is a passion of mine. I enjoy being able to immerse myself in other cultures to better understand the diverse world we live in. I've been fortunate enough to travel to 11 different countries--visiting family, vacationing, studying abroad, and one time unexpectedly booking a one-way ticket to Europe. I've been able to use my experiences to enhance the classroom culture and make lessons more realistic. I value being an advocate for my students. My travel experiences have helped to shape me into the person I am today. Not everyone has the opportunity to travel. As an advocate for my students, I bring my travel experiences into the classroom, making the wonders of our world more accessible to my students. For example, during our multi-genre animal writing unit I share a video I took of stingrays in the Cayman Islands. Using that footage I shape the conversation around how scientists observe animals to learn about them. Through this video, we learn about how stingrays swim, eat, and travel in groups. Using my life experiences, compared to any other youtube video, I am able to enhance student learning through the addition personal testimonies; for example, how the stingrays felt when I swimming with them. Once a student in my class wrote their entire multi-genre book on stingrays and was able to use my experience in their own individual poetry, nonfiction writing, and pourquoi!
